90th Anniversary Celebration a Big Hit
Brothers from six decades and from across the country gathered October 1, 2011, to celebrate 90 years of Beta Phi history at Purdue University. We were honored to have so many familiar faces, as well as many new faces, return and rejoice in the bonds of Pi Kappa Alpha brotherhood. The undergraduate brothers and a large pledge class of 38 were great hosts providing warm hospitality throughout the day.
The weekend kicked off Friday evening with an alumni reception hosted by the Beta Phi Foundation in the beautiful foyer of the Purdue Alumni Association Center. everyone enjoyed catching up with old friends. Following the reception we enjoyed a dinner in the Alumni Center Prusiecki Ballroom.
Saturday’s schedule at the Chapter House started with alumni registration in the front foyer. Ladies received a corsage and alumni were presented with a packet of information regarding the undergraduates and Chapter achievements. Pledges provided tours of the house and were proud to show off the newly renovated dining room and the new living room furniture with all coordinated dark brown leather couches and autobahns.
During breakfast, a new attraction this year was the old Beta Phi pictorial history being played on a DVD and projected through a large TV. Several old EMANON pictures and articles had been recently given to the Chapter, which had never been seen before. The Home Association held its annual meeting, with President Bob Nice ’82 providing an update on all the summer renovations. Next, Brother Jim Thompson ’57 led the alumni and undergraduates in singing a selection of old fraternity songs
The Chapter hosted a great lunch buffet in the dining room and the tables were covered in garnet and gold. In mid-afternoon, Brother Ed Neufer ’59 and I made a presentation on the history of Beta Phi. At 5 p.m. Brian Doolittle ’70 kicked off the start of the public phase of our $1.5 million capital campaign to replace major components of the infrastructure of the Chapter House. Brian was pleased to report that half of our goal had been raised during the past 12 months of the quiet phase of the campaign.
The special day concluded with the Foundation hosting a reception honoring our 90 years as Pikes at Purdue. There was a generous selection of food and the pledges brought around trays of specialty hors d’oeuvres. The only disappointment of the day was the evening football game. Purdue got run over by Notre Dame. The Beta Phi brotherhood was in full gear throughout the entire weekend.
Mark your calendars now for our 10th Pike reunion weekend. The dates are Friday to Sunday, November 2-4, 2012. Purdue plays Penn State. Make plans early to join us next year, and with your support we will be celebrating the success of our completed capital campaign!
